What is the FAFSA Application?

FAFSA stands for the “free application for federal student aid,” and it’s the first step in determining a student’s eligibility for a variety of student aid programs, including free grants, college work-study, student loans, and even some scholarships.

Students who plan to attend college in Fall 2025-Spring 2026 will need to submit the 2025-2026 FAFSA application, available at https://studentaid.gov/. First-time applicants will need to create an account on the https://studentaid.gov/ website first. Once they log in, they can access the FAFSA application. Dependent students will be inviting their parents to contribute some information to the FAFSA. So at least one parent will need to create an account with Federal Student Aid.

Join Fresh Start for Women in Owensboro for their annual Tea Party benefit. You can expect a catered brunch, live auction, door prizes, and testimonies from Fresh Start clients. Empty Bowls is sponsored by the St. James United Methodist Church that works to provide food to our friends and neighbors in need of assistance and to raise awareness of the hunger problem in our community.

This is the 12th Empty Bowls event that St. James has sponsored. For a $15 donation, people attending can see the bowls and receive a meal of soup, bread, and dessert. In addition, each person will get to choose one of the handmade bowls to take home with them. Not only will the bowl make a beautiful addition to their home, but it also is a reminder that they helped provide food to someone facing an empty bowl at mealtime.

All money raised at the event is donated to HOTEL INC and to the Synergy Center, two local charities that work to provide food to those in need in our community.

They expect to have 600+ bowls at the event, 100 of which will be made by WKU students.

The sixth annual Wendell Foster Half Marathon & 5K offers a flat and fast route of Owensboro, Kentucky. The 13.1-mile half marathon and 3.1-mile 5K will be fully supported, including some full and partial road closures. The race will start and finish on the riverfront by beautiful Smothers Park, which offers three signature fountains and an award-winning playground.

Water stations will be conveniently placed along the course and the races will be professionally timed. Finisher medals will be given to those that complete the course. Plus, prize money will be awarded to the top competitors in both the Half Marathon and 5K distances.

For the Half Marathon distance, there will be a 4 hour course time limit to complete the race. You must be 12 years of age on race day to register for the Half Marathon. When you run with us, you are directly supporting Wendell Foster’s mission of empowering people with disabilities! From all of us at Wendell Foster – thank you!

Guest Speakers: Bobette Franklin – Retired/Entrepreneur, Kristin Bridgman – Author, and Violet Coots – Empowerment Coach

Bobette Franklin – Topic: The Beginning of Broken

Bobette is a native of Bowling Green, KY. She met Steve Franklin at Lakeview Fellowship church. Married for over 25 years, Bobette and Steve are the blessed parents of their only adult son, Noah.
Graduating from WKU with a government degree, Bobette spent 30 years working for three Members of Congress, helping Kentuckians in need. Her greatest joy, and specialty, was assisting veterans during her years of service at the federal level. Bobette retired in 2023 to care for her aging mother, who passed in 2024. Bobette will tell you that she doesn’t regret leaving her career to provide her widowed mother with the love and physical assistance needed in what became the last year of her life (Eph 6:2, 1 Tim 5:3-4). Bobette’s mother taught her the ins and outs of cooking and baking, so Bobette has since opened a home-based bakery, CayPopsBG, and is enjoying serving joy and happiness to the community through her delicious baked goods. Bobette has loved serving her church in various ways through the years, from Ladies Ministry Leader to Freedom Celebration and One Holy Night Coordinator, to playing keys on the Worship Team, and loves participating in the Women’s bible studies and ministry at Lakeview Fellowship.

Kristin Bridgman – Topic: Redeeming Love – A Testimony

Kristin is a native of Oklahoma. She has been married to her husband Keith since 1981, and they currently live in Kentucky. They have two grown sons. Kris homeschooled their sons for fourteen years. Since that time, she began writing her thoughts at a nearby pond and thus began her widely read blog, Ponderings. Her devotions have been published in Our Daily Journey (a devotional site of the RBC Ministries), PCCWeb Daily Devotional, Ruby for Women Ezine Magazine, Healthy Leaders and she is a contributor in the book Alabaster Jars, Life in Abundance Collection 2. She is the author of two books, Ya Know What I’m Say’n, and Walking Mom Home. She began a Ministry for the Homeless in 2009 and was involved in a Homeless Outreach Bridge Ministry until 2015. She also has a love for photography.

Violet Coots – Topic: The Great Exchange – Embracing Grace

Violet is a widow, mother, grandmother, and retired insurance professional who faithfully answered God’s call to step into a new season of coaching after 40 years in the corporate world. As an empowerment coach, speaker, podcaster, author, and women’s Bible study teacher, Violet is dedicated to equipping individuals to live in the freedom of who Christ designed them to be. Actively involved in her church, she brings her heartfelt passion and transformative insights to help others experience breakthrough and walk boldly in their God-given purpose.

Hardwood Heroes 2025 is approaching quickly! It will be held on March 22nd at Cumberland Trace Elementary with doors opening at 10:00 am and tip-off at 11:00am. CFR’s Derek Gregory will be on-site to emcee and host the day of activities. The Rockerz Dance Team will be performing prior to the game so get your seat when the doors open at 10 AM.
