The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (movie)

The Herdman kids are absolutely the worst. They lie, they steal, they bully…and they’ve hijacked the town Christmas pageant. Directed by Dallas Jenkins (“The Chosen”) and based on the international bestseller by Barbara Robinson, THE BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER follows six siblings who sneak into church searching for snacks and walk away with the lead roles in the town pageant. Grace (Judy Greer) is directing the performance for the very first time; she and her daughter Beth (Molly Belle Wright) and husband Bob (Pete Holmes) are less than amused. But the play’s mischievous stars might unwittingly teach a community the true meaning of Christmas. Featuring Lauren Graham. Screenplay by Ryan Swanson and Platte F. Clark & Darin McDaniel.

Best Christmas Pageant Ever is such a fun movie and great reminder that Jesus didn’t come for perfect people. This story feels like it could have actually happened in a town somewhere and I think many people will be able to identify with and find themselves in one of the characters. This is a great family movie that just might become a Christmas classic.

The nostalgia of this timeless story fully comes back to life on the screen with this rendition!  So many nuances in the script and acting really brought this story to life in a way that will resonate with modern culture as well.  This may be my family’s new Christmas movie tradition.  What a great reminder that the Christmas story isn’t just a traditional tale told every year, but a life-transforming gospel that changes the trajectory of a family’s future.

-Stephanie Matthews, Partnership Director

My first thought was great ANOTHER version…but I was pleasantly surprised. They didn’t try to modernize it or update it for current culture. Some of the reactions start to hit real life, when assumptions are made about the fire that got started in the church, when the church people are more concerned about the image of the church and the town, than the reason for the season, when Imogene starts to ‘get it’, when the narrator as a young girl sees behind Imogene’s tough façade.
I wound up enjoying the movie very much! It’s 4+ out of 5 stars for me!

-Dale McCubbins, Weekend Show Host

I grew up reading this story and I was so excited to watch the pages come to life on the movie screen. The story is so sweet and heartfelt, it never disappoints! It’s an instant classic for my family to watch ever year!

The Best Christmas Pageant is a classic book, play and story of love, and how to overcome dealing with the challenges that come in our lives as adolescents. The story deals with questions like; How am I supposed to love someone who is being mean to me? Do I have to be kind to them?  — The big picture of the movie is the story of the unconditional love the Jesus has for us that transforms us into new creations. What I love the most is the willingness of the mom (Grace) to step into a role and the best she can with what she has. Her mother’s heart sees the pain and loneliness that Herdman children have. The daughter Beth just so desperately wants the Herdman siblings to just be nice. Love is reborn in each of them as they are given an opportunity to be apart of something bigger than themselves.
