Sometimes the enemy tries to use worldly labels to define who we are in things like success, finances, relationships, careers, and physical appearance to try to tell us who we are. “Who I Am To You” by Anne Wilson is an upbeat song that talks about transforming the lies, insecurities, and labels that are thrown at us everyday, and trading them into the truth of who God has already created us to be.
The chorus of this song says,
“So every time the enemy tries me
I say, “Get behind me”
I’m trading his lies for the truth
Devil, he can’t tell me who I am
‘Cause who I am is who I am to You”
This is a perfect depiction of the authority that God has given us when we start to believe lies about our identities. The devil has no authority over Jesus; earthly labels, insecurities, and lies from the enemy may attack hard on some days, but the truth of God’s word is that he has made us new, and our identity is found in him and him alone. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Jesus came on this earth and told his followers that although they are living IN the world, they are not OF the world. The lies from the enemy start to sound familiar to us when we start to believe them.
In one of the verses, Anne says,
“That liar, liar’s whispering again
And lately, it’s been sounding like the truth.”
Maybe those words resonate with you because the liar is whispering lies to you. Lies that twist the truth of God’s character. This is the reality on many days; it may feel like the small whispers are the truth, especially when it happens often. This song is an encouragement to let the devil know that God has already called us loved and his children. The devil may try to use familiar tricks that disguise as the truth, but we can walk in confidence with the truth of God.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well!” Psalm 139:14
God’s works are wonderful, even when life may seem impossible. “Who I Am To You” reminds us that the devil has tactics, but he only deceives the truth. Jesus has already won the victory in our lives and our identities. In him, we have new creation, and the devil has no hold on the truth of God’s word.
