What It Is
The annual National Day of Prayer (May 1st) is an opportunity for Americans to pray together in faith—believing and standing on God’s promise and abounding in HOPE. Prayers will be poured out in all 50 states and several U.S. territories through tens of thousands of local prayer gatherings in parks, churches, schools, and statehouses to lift up prayers and petitions to God, followed by an evening national broadcast hosted by National Day of Prayer Task Force president, Kathy Branzell and co-hosted by Tim Tebow.
The Circle of Good News is an event where the entire Bible is read out loud in 20 minutes. It takes 365 people. Each person is given a starting place in the Bible and at 11:30am everyone starts reading at the same time. In this way the entire Bible is shared.
The Prayer Gathering is when community members come together in prayer for the 7 centers of influence in America: family, church, media, government, military, education, and business.
History
The National Day of Prayer tradition predates the founding of the United States of America, evidenced by the Continental Congress’ proclamation in 1775 setting aside a day of prayer. In 1952, Congress established an annual day of prayer and, in 1988, that law was amended, designating the National Day of Prayer as the first Thursday in May.
