Matt Maher

Matt joined Larry & Bridget on the Morning Show for a rich and honest conversation about faith, transitions, parenting, grief, Scripture, and what it really looks like to walk closely with God in every season of life.

From the very beginning, Matt brought warmth, humor, and depth to the conversation. Whether he was sharing about upcoming travels to Australia and the Sydney Opera House or talking about “dad week” while his wife takes a girls trip, he reminded us that even in a busy life of ministry and music, faith is lived out in everyday moments.

Staying Grounded in the Word

One of the most meaningful parts of the interview came when Matt shared how he spends time in Scripture daily. He explained that he follows the lectionary readings each morning as a way to stay grounded and attentive to God’s voice.

Matt talked about how the Holy Spirit often uses songwriting to shape his own heart before it ever impacts listeners.

“I always say when I write songs, it’s usually the Holy Spirit telling me, ‘This is what I want you to meditate on in your own life.’”

He also shared his appreciation for reading different Bible translations, mentioning the NIV, The Message, and the New American Bible as tools that help him approach Scripture from fresh perspectives.

Learning Through Life’s Transitions

With graduation season in full swing, Larry & Bridget asked Matt about navigating life transitions — something we all experience in one way or another.

Matt reflected on his oldest son preparing to move from middle school into high school and how every new season can feel like opening a blank notebook on the first day of school — it’s exciting!

“God is inviting me into something new.”

He encouraged listeners to approach transitions with humility and curiosity, remembering that as disciples of Jesus, we are always learning and growing.

One especially powerful moment came when Matt talked about grief and loss. Sharing about the passing of his father, he spoke honestly about how healing often takes much longer than we expect.

“God’s not in a hurry.”

That simple truth resonated deeply with everyone in the room.

A Personal Reflection on Fatherhood

The conversation turned especially tender as Matt shared discoveries he made after his father passed away. While cleaning out his dad’s apartment, Matt found letters his father had written to Jesus — deeply personal prayers asking God to renew his heart.

For Matt, it revealed a side of his father’s faith he had never fully seen before.

That experience has shaped how he now parents his own children. He shared how important it is for parents to let their children see an authentic relationship with God — not perfection, but real dependence on Jesus.

“Find a way to show the side of you with your kids that invites them to want the same kind of relationship with God.”

Seeing God as a Loving Father

Another beautiful moment came when Bridget asked Matt how he believes God the Father sees him.

Matt admitted that earlier in life, he often worried that he was disappointing God. But as he’s grown older — and especially as a father himself — he’s begun to understand God’s heart differently.

“My kids don’t have to do anything. I’m already their biggest fan.”

He described God as loving unconditionally while also lovingly guiding and encouraging growth, much like a good father cheering on his children.

Dreams, Gratitude, and God’s Faithfulness

Toward the end of the interview, Matt reflected on the dreams God has placed in our hearts and how, over time, he’s realized God has faithfully answered so many of the deepest desires beneath those dreams.

“I’m very grateful that I keep getting to make music and it keeps inspiring people to love God and love others well.”

That gratitude was evident throughout the entire conversation.

Celebrating 40 Years of Ministry

Matt also took a moment to congratulate Christian Family Radio on celebrating 40 years of ministry. He encouraged the station by reflecting on the beauty of faithfully “showing up” year after year to serve listeners and share the hope of Jesus.

As the interview wrapped up, Larry & Bridget prayed over Matt, his family, his health, and his ministry — asking God to continue pouring into him as he pours into others through music and ministry.

And honestly? It felt less like an interview and more like sitting in on a meaningful conversation among friends.

We’re grateful for artists like Matt Maher who continue pointing people toward Jesus with honesty, humility, and hope.
