In The Gospel of John chapter 6, Jesus fed the five thousand, Jesus does something incredible. He feeds more than 5,000 people with just a few loaves and fish. The crowd is amazed. They’re ready to make Him king on the spot. But instead of embracing the applause, Jesus walks away.
Why?
Jesus essentially had the “first mega church,” but Jesus never came to build a fan base. He came so that we may believe in Him and have eternal life
When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.
John 6:15
He still fed the people even though He knew many of them would eventually leave Him.
The same crowd that celebrated Him for the miracle would soon struggle with His message. After the miracle, the people followed Jesus across the sea, hungry for more signs, more wonders, more proof. Yet Jesus confronted them with a deeper truth: He is the source of eternal life. Jesus gave them a reality check. He told them they were following Him because He fed them—not because they truly understood who He was or what the miracles represented. He was essentially saying, “You no longer need more confirmation. Either you believe in Me, or you don’t. They didn’t need more signs because He had already shown them exactly who He was—the son of God.
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you, not because you understood the miraculous signs. But don’t be so concerned about perishable things like food. Spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the Son of Man can give you. For God the Father has given me the seal of his approval.”
John 6:22-25
The hard part wasn’t understanding His words—it was receiving them. He wasn’t offering a convenient religion. He was asking for complete surrender. And many walked away.
60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, “This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?”
61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you? 62 Then what if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before! 63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you—they are full of the Spirit[e] and life. 64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe.” For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him. 65 He went on to say, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled them.”
66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
John 6:60-66
What’s striking is that Jesus still fed the 5,000 even though He knew many of them would eventually leave Him. His goodness wasn’t dependent on their loyalty.
At some point, we all have to ask ourselves: Do I believe because God has provided good for me, or do I believe because I truly know He is who He says He is—the Son of God, faithful and good regardless of my circumstances?
Sometimes we spend so much time asking, “Why did they leave?” But maybe the better question is: Why do YOU stay?
When life gets hard… the journey gets exhausting… when prayers seem unanswered… your reason to stay must already be stronger than your reason to leave.
Jesus turns to His disciples and asks if they want to leave too. Then Simon Peter responds with one of the most powerful statements in Scripture:
67 “You do not want to leave too, do you?” Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 We have come to believe and to know that you are the Holy One of God.”
John 6:67-68
Not, “I’m staying because life is easy.”
Not, “I’m staying because I understand everything.”
But, “I’m staying because You are Lord. You are the giver of eternal life. The least I can do is follow You.”
We stay because we truly believe Jesus is Lord. He is the giver of life. The least we can do is follow Him. Without Him, we are nothing and can do nothing.
4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing
John 15:4-5
There comes a point where we reach the end of ourselves and the beginning of Him. A place where we stop operating in our own strength and finally allow God to lead according to His will instead of our own.
His Word is still enough to sustain us.
His presence is still enough to carry us.
His grace is still enough to cover us.
Because when the storms come—and they will—your reason to stay matters.
So today, ask yourself: Who is God to you right now?
Is He simply a provider when you need something?
A rescuer when life gets difficult?
Or is He truly Lord and your source of life?
